Live-action ‘Attack on Titan’ gets a sinister new poster!

The shrinking budget for complex computer-effects has allowed many Japanese filmmakers to bring the world of anime, with its gravity-defying heroes and city-destroying battles, into the realm of live-action. Successful adaptations of the Death Note and Gantz series have helped pave the way in recent years, and the trend shows no signs of slowing down.

In fact, director Shinji Higuchi – known primarily for his special effects work on the 90′s Gamera trilogy – is preparing to bring Attack on Titan to the big screen in a two-part saga, the first of which releases next year. The series Attack on Titan takes place in a strange, quasi-medieval world in which giant humanoid creatures named Titans appear and threaten the lives of everyday people.

Civilization’s only line of defense of the Titans are teenage soldiers who traverse the Titans’ massive bodies using powerful grappling hooks. The first season of the popular show is currently streaming on Netflix.

Watch the first Jackie Chan’s epic action flick ‘Dragon Blade’!

Currently in post-production is Jackie Chan’s Dragon Blade, a period piece that sees a Roman Legion getting caught up in an adventure in China where they cross paths with a Chinese hero played by Chan. They are forced to join forces to battle an even greater foe that threatens the whole world.

Dragon Blade will be helmed by Daniel Lee, a veteran Hong Kong filmmaker, mostly known for 1994’s What Price Survival, 1996’s Black Mask, 2010’s 14 Blades, and most recently, 2011’s White Vengeance.

According to Super Chan’s Jackie Chan Blog (via Film Combat Syndicate), Dragon Blade has officially started filming: “Dragon Blade officially got underway today in Hengdian with some battle scenes. Filming conditions were difficult, as a combination of heat, heavy costumes and a long day took their toll on cast, crew and extras alike.”

A new promotional poster for Dragon Blade has hit the net. New press photo featuring the cast and director: Jackie Chan, John Cusack, Lin Peng, Amanda Wang and filmmaker, Daniel Lee. Also, some new plot details have emerged. According to Film Business Asia: “Cusack plays a Roman General who teams up with a former military commander (played by Chan) to protect the western border; Brody plays the villain who is in pursuit of Cusack’s character.”

Supermoon Coming June 24th

The Moon appears to be in a nearly circular orbit around the Earth. But that word “nearly” means that there are slight variations in its motion across the heavens.

As it turns out, the distance from the Earth to the Moon varies by about 30,000 miles. This sounds like a lot, but it only represents about a 6-7 percent deviation from the average distance between the two bodies.

On Earth, the difference between when the Moon is at its closest point (perigee) and its farthest position (apogee) causes the Moon to appear slightly smaller or larger in the sky. [Note: these terms can be a little confusing, because perigee and apogee vary after each orbit, which means they change from month to month and year to year. So they really represent the nearest and farthest points in the lunar orbit over a specific period of time.]

On June 24th, the Moon will be in a nearly full moon phase as it reaches perigee, making it appear slightly larger in the night sky. On that day, the Moon will be the closest to Earth that it will be for all of 2013. Such approaches, when perigee coincides closely with a full moon, are known as supermoons. But the apparent size difference is very difficult to see; only careful measurements reveal the difference.

This particular supermoon is actually not that great. Occurrences in each of the coming years will be even better. The best one of the century won’t happen until December 6, 2052. And the Moon will not cross within 356,400 kilometers until January 1, 2257 (356,371 km), a truly rare approach!

Male Guppies Reproduce Even After Death

UC Riverside-led research team finds posthumous reproduction in guppies because sperm of dead males survive inside females for at least 10 months

Performing experiments in a river in Trinidad, a team of evolutionary biologists has found that male guppies continue to reproduce for at least ten months after they die, living on as stored sperm in females, who have much longer lifespans (two years) than males (three-four months).

“Populations that are too small can go extinct because close relatives end up breeding with each other and offspring suffer from inbreeding,” said David Reznick, a professor of biology at the University of California, Riverside and the principal investigator of the research project. “If there are stored sperm, then the real population size is bigger than the number of animals you see. Also, stored sperm can increase genetic variation in other ways.”

Reznick explained that male guppies are brightly colored and very variable in coloration. Females prefer males with rare color patterns. A dead male with a long-lost color pattern can later give birth to a son who can now be preferred by females because he is different from all other males in the population. Because some females live so long, those sons can appear more than two generations after the father’s death.

“Adult female guppies are the strongest swimmers and now we know they are the best able to colonize new habitats,” Reznick said. “Long term sperm storage means that a single female can colonize a new site and establish a new population that has a fair measure of genetic diversity since we have found that the older, larger females can carry the sperm of several males. Plants do the same sort of thing differently. They produce seeds that can lay dormant in the soil for decades so each year new offspring can appear that represent many prior generations of parents. Water fleas also lay eggs that can lie dormant for long intervals of time. But this is the first time we see such a phenomenon in a vertebrate.”

Study results appeared online June 5 in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B. While it is well known that guppies store sperm, Reznick and his team had never before thought of the extent of the storage.

“In addition to learning about sperm storage, this is the first time we are learning about the huge differences in lifespan between males and females,” Reznick said. “If we were to use males to estimate generation time, then these differences mean that lucky females live for three generations. A human equivalent would be for us to have women around who were 90 years old and still very fertile.”

The experiments Reznick and colleagues conducted in Trinidad are part of a large-scale, interdisciplinary research program that is characterizing the interaction between ecological and evolutionary processes.

“We are collecting these data for other reasons,” Reznick said. “What we are learning is that such detailed data yield unexpected rewards. Very few studies have the kind of information that we are collecting — long-term mark recapture with genetics — so there is rarely the chance to make a discovery like this. What we are seeing seems rare because it has never before been reported, but it may only seem rare because almost no one has looked for it. It could be common and could play an important role in sustaining genetic diversity in natural populations.”

Archeologists Say Humans Left Africa For Asia Only 60,000 Years Ago, Rejecting Previous Theory

Modern humans did not leave Africa prior to the massive eruption of Sumatra’s volcano Mount Toba 74,000 years ago, according to a new study appearing in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Rather, Professor Martin Richards of the University of Huddersfield and colleagues have concluded that genetic evidence supports the belief that they departed for Asia approximately 60,000 years ago. Their findings refute a recent theory which had suggested that there was archaeological evidence establishing the presence of people in the southern part of the continent prior to the super-eruption, the university said in a statement.

Previous research completed by Richards used mitochondrial DNA evidence to show that anatomically modern men and women departed from Africa via a “southern coastal route” from the Horn and through Arabia some 14,000 years after the eruption of Mount Toba. Since then, however, archaeologists working in India say they had discovered evidence that humans had lived there far earlier – perhaps up to 120,000 years ago.

Those claims were made after the archaeologists discovered stone tools beneath a layer of Toba ash in 2007. In a rebuttal to those claims, Richards, University of Cambridge archaeologist Sir Paul Mellars, and others found additional genetic evidence to support Richards’ previous conclusion.

“One of the things we didn’t have in 2005 was very much evidence from India in the way of mitochondrial sequences. Now, with a lot of people doing sequencing and depositing material in databases there are about 1,000 sequences from India,” Mellars explained.

By using modern mitochondrial DNA and working backwards, Richards and his colleagues were able to make more exact estimates as to when exactly people set foot on the Indian continent. That genetic information, combined with additional evidence and research, led them to conclude that the dispersal from Africa and the settlement in India could have happened no earlier than 60,000 years ago.

“We also argue that close archaeological similarities between African and Indian stone-tool technologies after 70,000 years ago, as well as features such as beads and engravings, suggest that the slightly later Indian material had an African source,” Richards added. “There were people in India before the Toba eruption, because there are stone tools there, but they could have been Neanderthals – or some other pre-modern population.”

The recently-published research is “an unusually strong scientific put-down,” said Lewis Smith of the Daily Mail. He added that the research done by Richards’ team essentially declares that the pre-eruption settlement theory is “worthless,” and that the researchers wrote that they found “no evidence, either genetic or archaeological, for a very early modern human colonization of South Asia, before the Toba eruption.”
